Basic Criminal Law & Procedures (2025 Version)

Corrections and law enforcement staff are an essential element of an effective criminal justice system.  This “Basic Criminal Law and Procedure” course will address basic concepts and definitions in the criminal law as well as elements of the constitution and rules of procedures.

This two-hour course will address constitutional elements, including the United States and the Minnesota Constitution.  Procedural requirements and the Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure as well as state statutes will be covered.  We will look at the workflow of a case and how it works within the criminal justice system, including what a 36-Hour Rule and a 48-Hour Rule mean. Mental Illness and the criminal court system will be addressed as well as victim rights.

Basics of Animal Law and Investigations

This course was produced with the Minnesota Animal Humane Society to give law enforcement a basic introduction to Minnesota’s animal welfare laws and specifically addresses animal negligence scenarios that are commonly encountered in the course of duty.  It provides clarity to officers regarding the enforcement of MN Statute Sec 343.21 subd 7 – animal neglect.

Data Practices 101

This introductory course is your guide to understanding Minnesota Data Practices Laws and their implications. You’ll learn to classify data effectively through engaging lessons, identify key legal requirements, and ensure timely and lawful data access. Gain critical insights into handling sensitive and exempt data while mastering compliance strategies to mitigate risks and avoid violations. This course equips you with the tools to handle data while safeguarding privacy and upholding legal standards.

Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard Of Hearing (2025 Version)

This course is designed to introduce learners to the deaf culture and present effective communication strategies with members of this community. This course will increase your awareness and the necessity of all agency staff to effectively communicate with persons affected by hearing loss.

This eLearning course covers deaf culture, basic sign language for law enforcement, guidelines and tips for patrol and jail staff, legal responsibilities, and methods of communication will be introduced. We will learn how to work with interpreters and learn ways we can all work together to effectively communicate.

Legal staff will cover what the expectations are of the staff with regard to the Americans With Disability Act, the Minnesota Human Rights Act and the Minnesota State Statutes.

Implicit Bias

This course was put together to meet Minnesota’s mandate for providing an “Implicit Bias” training to all law enforcement in the state. The course meets the objectives that were set by the state and was piloted by over 200 Law Enforcement Professionals both on-line and in classroom throughout the country.

The material in this course will be thought provoking and not everyone will agree with all parts of this training.  That too is part of the training. It is suggested that students with questions about the content of this course seek additional understanding with their sheriff, police chief or director of training for their agency.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

This course is designed to equip employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize, prevent, and appropriately respond to sexual harassment in the workplace. The course defines sexual harassment, explores its various forms—including quid pro quo and hostile work environment—and provides real-world examples to illustrate unacceptable behaviors. Participants will gain insight into the personal, organizational, and legal consequences of harassment, as well as their roles and responsibilities in fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace culture. By the end of the training, participants will be prepared to contribute to a safe, professional, and harassment-free work environment.
